⚖️ Expert Verdict

The Epson Expression Home XP-4200 and the HP DeskJet 2820e offer a choice between an automated household tool and a minimalist budget printer. The Epson is vastly more productive because it includes automatic double-sided printing and a 2.4-inch colour LCD screen, while the HP 2820e has no screen and requires manual flipping for 2-sided jobs. The Epson also uses individual ink cartridges, which are more economical than HP’s tri-colour system where you must discard the entire cartridge if one colour runs out. While the HP 2820e is compact and very easy to set up via the HP Smart App, its print quality and speed fall short of the Epson. The Epson’s internal paper tray also keeps your desk tidier than the HP's open rear-feed design. For a better overall user experience and much higher long-term value, the Epson is the clear choice. The Epson XP-4200 is our winner for its superior design and automation.

"Perfect size for my halls. Individual inks are a proper win because I only ever seem to run out of magenta. Prints my essays fast enough, though it sounds a bit like a small aircraft taking off when it starts up."

"Sorted."

"Cheap to buy, but they trap you with the HP+ thing. You need to be online to print which is a bit dodgy if your internet goes down. Does the job, but read the fine print first."
